Home design is a process of selecting a design, deciding on a color scheme, picking furniture, and finally to accessorize when home design encompasses conducting an in depth study of how the room currently being used is used, and any other practical changes which are necessary. While planning the design process, home owners must also consider any possible future changes which may have to be made to the house and its location. These changes can include adding a garden, a pool or even moving to another house in the neighborhood. This is why it is important for home owners to do extensive research into the many available home designs, and not settle for a design which is not what they really desire. When this basic step is not taken, a homeowner runs the risk of spending thousands of dollars later on unwanted modifications, leaving themselves with a house which does not meet their needs.

The first step in home design involves the identification of the purpose of the living room, whether it is for sitting, dining, napping or for watching television. Next comes the issue of seating, where the selection of chairs and couches in relation to the layout of the house needs to be made. Seating arrangement, whether in the living room, kitchen, hallway, bedroom or any other place within the house, must be comfortable for the occupant. There are many different types of seating options, such as wooden or modular seating, modular sofa sets, accent chairs, lounge chairs, sectionals, recliners, sectional armchairs and loveseats.

For seating, homeowners may choose to purchase contemporary style seating, such as sectionals or recliners with a retro-modern aesthetic. A popular retro-modern style chair is that of the retro sofa set, which can be fully customized with fabric, cushions, seat covers and upholstery. By incorporating vintage accessories such as old glass coffee tables, metal bookcases, vintage paintings and lamps, a retro seating ensemble can be created in the home.

Another aspect of interior design is the decor of the walls and floors. Walls are often chosen to define different sections within a house. As a result, an interior designer must pay special attention to the choice of wall furnishings. Whether it is a painting, a sculpture or a wall rug, the choice of wall decor can affect the overall feel of the room.

Lighting is yet another crucial aspect of interior design. Homeowners often choose to put furniture in dark corners, such as hallways or basements. This leads to an aesthetic problem: light being filtered into the room, which is counter to the design objective. To combat this, light fixtures such as pendant lights, recessed lighting fixtures and track lighting fixtures are used. Recessed lighting fixtures direct light towards a specific area such as a statue, shelf or a door; a pendant light directs light out over the whole room; and track lighting helps to illuminate a larger space. With these three types of light fixtures, creating an aesthetic with the appropriate blend of colors, textures and materials is possible.

Vintage Home Decor items are another way of bringing a certain atmosphere into a space. When using antique furniture, its durability is one of its main advantages. Also, it has an aesthetic appeal that cannot be duplicated by modern furniture. As such, it is often more expensive than contemporary or modern furniture. In most cases, vintage pieces are considered rare and thus valuable.
